Are You An Online Litterbug? 3 Simple Habits to Cure Social Bookmark Littering

Are you a slacker? Do you find yourself beginning projects all over the web only to never return or barely ever look at it again? Don’t be an online litterbug.
Now that you have created profiles on all the social bookmarking networks you’ve already got the hard part out of the way. Now let’s get the ball rollin’ to build yourself a Social Bookmarking empire with these 3 simple daily habits:
1. Sign up for Google Reader – Add the RSS feeds to your favorite blogs to Reader then you can quickly scan for new posts or alerts you have set up. This saves me a ton of time rather than skipping all over the net to find the posts I’d like to share.
(Side note: Everyone should have a Google alert set up with their own name and for their website to track when you are being mentioned online.) You can use another reader if you prefer, but Google is my top choice for it’s uniform acceptance across the web and the integration of all the other Google tools.
2. Scan your Reader for possible bookmarking – I share the sites in several ways. I will share inside Google Reader to share with my Google FriendConnect contacts, Tweet it on Twitter, and bookmark on one of my social bookmarking sites. I prefer Delicious, Stumble Upon or Digg because of the traffic they get.

One of the tools I use for easy sharing is the Firefox extension Shareaholic. You can quickly share any site with the top networks with a click of a button right in your browser or a right click of your mouse.
With Sharaholic’s Buzz Monitor you can track the freshest news, videos and blogs as they emerge on the realtime web to bookmark as well.
3. Comment both on the site and the social bookmarking network – There is a trickle effect here that you need to remind yourself of to stay on track:
- You’re building links to your blog by leaving comments on other blogs (at least those that do not use nofollow)
- You’re building friendships and favors with other website owners by sharing their content
- You’re gaining recognition by leaving your name everywhere. It’s called the ISYOT or “I’ve Seen You Out There”.
- You’re adding popularity to your social network profile by adding lots of note worthy content to share.
Jim Gaudet is one of my coolest readers and is an IT guy that now spends his time chillin in Costa Rica. Jim left a comment on the last post with his bookmarking habits, and it looks like he has got the process down. He says:
I have my own system now. I spend each day reading my personal news, Google Reader.. I only click on the Titles I want to read (yup, you won today!) then if I do read it, I try to add a comment if I can. But, I do make sure to add it to SM, Stumble, reddit, digg, twitter, delicious and facebook mainly..I have decided on those only and don’t even mess with the others….If you are out just looking to comment and get links, or vote for traffic it will not work. These sites do not have idiots working for them, they will catch you and ban your site and then you are done.
Great points, Jim! Looks like we have a lot in common….especially the reading of great blogs!!
Take these steps to build yourself new habits of successful bookmarking. It takes 21 days for the brain to rewire itself and create hardwired new habits. You’ll be proud of the results those 3 weeks will make.
What are some of your daily success habits? Do you have any favorite time saving tools you can share?

Wow, that Shareaholic is a great time-saving tip for social bookmarking sites! Thanks for the awesome tip – I love that it is even available for Chrome as its really difficult still to find plugins that work for google’s browser!
Shareaholic is awesome! I use it daily. Glad to hear there’s compatibility with Google Chrome too. With the busy lifestyles we all lead, every little time saver helps!

Hey Coree,
Thanks for the mention, sweet! :~) Sorry I am so late in reading this. I have been working on a big project and not much time for anything else. I see in your picture above that you had 508 unread items, I haven’t even opened mine this morning, oh boy.. These are the days that some people get skimmed, or skipped…
Google Alerts is a great tool, I have had that setup for quite a while and it is great. I have a few other businesses and this tool helps me keep up with the competition.
Finally my time saving daily, well sort of; Don’t laugh, but I use Microsoft Outlook. I have 6 different emails for my companies not including my personal ones (gmail and thejimgaudet). Outlook makes it easy to check and organize them all, but my main reason for using it is to support my clients.
One of the biggest problems with so many emails is that my in-boxes can become cluttered with my “to do list”.
So, in Outlook you have the Follow Up feature, which I use heavily and it helps me to organize my work (network admin stuff, web design stuff, crap to check out, etc.) Basically I just click the follow up, schedule my time to do this (in a block of time I have for each work mode I am in) and then put that email into a saved folder.
This serves two purposes. First, I am able to look at each email at a time and make a decision on it, now or later. And second, I will not forget to do something because it is buried in with a bunch of other emails.
Damn, long comment sorry. I am still on my first cup of coffee this morning.
@Jim: Haha!! Dang, they must grow some awesome coffee beans over there in Costa Rica. Now I have a couple reasons to visit.
Umm, thanks for pointing out my 508 unread items!! Guess I should have cleaned that up a bit before using that pic!
I like the tips on how to use Outlook. I have started several times to use the flagging and to do lists, but haven’t worked out my own system yet. By the way, I am a multi email person too. I have 1 for here, 2 for work, and one personal all in Outlook. So, yeah..it does take some skimming and scanning, but always prioritize.
That would be the main point I suppose. Prioritization. With social media so diverse it can get overwhelming, so like you, I choose 3 or 4 sites that I make my base and work those. Thanks for all your tips and tricks!!

Yes, the best coffee is here. I actually live 200 meters from Cafe Britt, which is the biggest coffee company in Costa Rica…
I get to smell them cooking it..

Great tips! I am installing shareaholic right now.
Google is my top time-saving tool. As I’m drinking my morning coffee I check my iGoogle homepage with my emails, reader, alerts, tasks, stock portfolio, everything! I find that it’s a great way to spend the first 30 minutes or so of my day.
