Marketing From A Woman's Point of View

Is Your Marketing Plan on a Diet?

delicious 2008 pie slice 300x296 Is Your Marketing Plan on a Diet? Last week I did something that most women struggle with on a daily basis…I splurged.  After a long and “eventful” week I decided I would reward myself for making it through by taking my two daughters to, Marie Callenders, one of our favorite restaurants.  If you’ve heard of my friend Marie, you are already dreaming of chocolate satin, lemon meringue, rich cheesecake, or warm Dutch apple pie.

As I read a few articles on marketing strategies this week it has reminded me of our pie indulgence.

A common misunderstanding is that Marketing is Advertising, and vice versa.  While the two are intertwined they are not exactly the same. The easiest way to visualize Marketing vs Advertising is to think of a pie.  While advertising could be seen as a slice of the pie, Marketing would be seen as the entire pie, consisting of advertising, personal branding, public relations, research/market analysis, product development, and more.    Without all of these factors you have a marketing plan on a diet..and no one dislikes diets more than your business.  Not even me.

Muhammad Saleem of Pro Net Advertising used a great advertisement from Ads of the World that explains the difference between Marketing, Advertising, PR and Personal Branding:

Don’t mistake Advertising for Marketing.  Advertising is a very important to consider in forming your marketing strategies, but there are several other pieces to  well balanced marketing plans:

  • Market Research and Analysis
  • Product or Service Design
  • Well Thought Out Advertising Strategy
  • Personal Branding and Image Recognition
  • Public Relations

Don’t mistake one for the other, but keep an eye on all of these aspects for successful marketing plans.  Sit down and write out your goals and objectives, then go over each of the factors above to create your own personal Marketing plan of action along with dates you could logically accomplish each goal.

Where do you find yourself spending most of your energy?  Is that particular part of your marketing plan producing your desired results and moving your closer to your market goal? If not, what could you change?

By the way, YES…we did order the pie at Marie Callenders, and YES it was worth it!

I too spend a LOT of time explaining the difference between “advertising” and “marketing” to clients.

I tend to use the “dictionary” definition of marketing which is ALL of the activities involved in the transfer of goods and services from a producer to consumer.

Advertising – on the other hand – is when you PAY to deliver marketing messages to your target audience.

With that definition, it make’s Muhammad Saleem illustration a bit inaccurate. In his example, the first illustration should be X-rated – the actual TRANSFER of the service from producer to consumer. :)

Congrats on the “splurging”. The only way to survive long term on a “diet” is to plan for splurges – hey – a lot like advertising!

Thanks for the input, Kathy. Even when I am at my most outspoken moments I try to keep things no worse than R rated around here! ;-)

The difference between the dictionary definition of Marketing and my version is that I understand mine. One thing I aim to do is keep things in such a simple language that even the newest person in business can get a grasp of it and immediately start implementing.

I know for myself, when I read some dictionary type business definitions that I find myself re-reading a few times to really get it.

Marketing is easy. Have passion about what you do and begin implementing one strategy. Get good at it and move on to the next while you keep the other going. Continue to add all your marketing strategies and become the Master at one. You will know what works for you. Do it. Simple.

I LOVE those diagrams. I’m saving this post for sure. I have a feeling I’ll be able to pass it along to several people as they jumble up these terms in the future.
