I LOVE those diagrams. I'm saving this post for sure. I have a feeling I'll be able to pass it along to several people as they jumble up these terms in the future.

Thanks for the input, Kathy. Even when I am at my most outspoken moments I try to keep things no worse than R rated around here! ;-)

The difference between the dictionary definition of Marketing and my version is that I understand mine. One thing I aim to do is keep things in such a simple language that even the newest person in business can get a grasp of it and immediately start implementing.

I know for myself, when I read some dictionary type business definitions that I find myself re-reading a few times to really get it.

Marketing is easy. Have passion about what you do and begin implementing one strategy. Get good at it and move on to the next while you keep the other going. Continue to add all your marketing strategies and become the Master at one. You will know what works for you. Do it. Simple.

I too spend a LOT of time explaining the difference between "advertising" and "marketing" to clients.

I tend to use the "dictionary" definition of marketing which is ALL of the activities involved in the transfer of goods and services from a producer to consumer.

Advertising - on the other hand - is when you PAY to deliver marketing messages to your target audience.

With that definition, it make's Muhammad Saleem illustration a bit inaccurate. In his example, the first illustration should be X-rated - the actual TRANSFER of the service from producer to consumer. :)

Congrats on the "splurging". The only way to survive long term on a "diet" is to plan for splurges - hey - a lot like advertising!
