Marketing From A Woman's Point of View

You Know You Are A Twitter Snob If

Woman Photographing Herself

There’s been something eating at me lately and I’m going to just say it, because frankly…sometimes I just don’t feel like being Miss Nicey Nice.

Whether you are considered a “social media guru” or are just trying to build your base of followers up, there are several things you can do to really make yourself look like a Social Media Snob.

Warning: this may rattle a few cages.  If you’re practicing any of these traits you may find an uncontrollable urge to leave a retaliatory comment.  By all means, go ahead.  I’d love to hear the ridiculous reasonings behind your skilled strategy.

Here are 10 traits of what I would call a Twitter Snob.  You know you are a snob if:

1.  You have 50k followers but you only follow 100 or so of your other snobby buddies so you can engage in your “We are the group you wish you were in” conversations.

2.  You follow someone only to get them to follow you back then unfollow them to avoid looking like the spammer you are.

3.  You DM someone but don’t have the courtesy to follow them back so they can respond in a DM.  (Hopefully your poor minions respond with a loud @ reply letting everyone know that they can’t reply because you’ve chosen to have a one way relationship)

4.  You never once visit the blog or website of those that follow or mention you to see what they are all about.

5.  You Retweet any post that has your username mentioned (making sure your @username is mentioned again) rather than just thanking the person for mentioning you via a separate tweet or DM.  <—-LAME-O

6.  You use “protected tweets” and allow someone to follow you but don’t follow back.  Seriously? Are you that cool?  How very nice of you to allow someone such a privlege to view your “protected” scrolls of divine tweeting….but if you don’t want to interact, then why approve a follow?

7.  You auto DM your followers to give them exclusive offers to your products that are not selling without a spambot annoying the crap out of everyone. STOP.  Take the time to see if your product might even benefit your follower before spamming…maybe have a two way conversation to ask them.  Wow…what a novel concept.

8.  You send someone an auto DM to say you are different from the rest and promise that YOUR DM is not an auto DM.  They respond to your promise with a bit of info about themselves and you never reply.  Why?  Because you ARE just like everyone else that sends auto DM’s only you’re worse because you are a liar too.

9.  You never answer any of the @replies sent to you…unless it’s sent by someone with over 50k followers or is in your snobby buddy list.

10.  You schedule tweets or hire someone to blast the Twitterverse with your blog posts from the last month without ever adding any conversation to your feed.  Make that 10x worse if your blog posts are all about succeeding in social media.  What is that called again?  Oh, yeah…a POSER.

Okay, I am done ranting.  I think.

We hear it all the time….listen, engage, interact, share…it’s what social media is all about.  Yes, we can drum up business with social media marketing.  Yes, we can sell products online.  NO, it’s not okay to be a one way loudspeaker.  In fact, it is just socially unacceptable.

Enjoy people.  Let your hair down and talk, laugh, and care about others.  You may even build some lasting friendships that carry over to the offline world.  I guarantee you that you will find more business this way and the word of mouth referrals that come from those relationships will far outweigh the spammy crap of a Twitter snob.

Did I miss anything?  What other Twitter snob traits do you find unacceptable?  Share them in the comments below.

P.S.> You can also test your Twitter snob level by taking the short quiz that Kate Ottavio put together right after I posted this article.  Not sure if my post inspired the quiz, but it’s entertaining none the less.

  • Well said! Although I have always felt that how a person tweeted on Twitter was an individual thing and followers had the option to unfollow should they choose, I DO believe there are certain considerations to be given if you truly wish to build relationships. I still consider myself a newbie and love learning from seasoned friends on Twitter. Plus, I will never forgot last year when I really admired a lady on Twitter and learned she was a snob. After retweeting, attempting to engage, mentioning, etc., for a few months, I received ZERO tweets of thanks. My life has been just fine without her. Thanks for the great list!

    I totally agree: # 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 10
    Totally agree & these piss me off!: # 3, 8, 9
I do this all the time: #4

Thanks to @PaulBritPhoto for retweeting @patty farmer, I found your post and am now following you on Twitter, as well as subscribed by email. So nice to meet you! I really like your style!
  • Hey Decotta! Well, very nice to meet you too! I'll have to give a big virtual hug to both Paul & Patty for introducing us. :)

#8 ticks me off too. I just had that happen to me the other day so it was fresh. Someone (that tweets social media stuff all the time) DM'd me with that promise that they were truly interested & asked me to share more about who I am, what I like, etc. When it was completely ignored I was probably more pissed off at myself for being duped than I was at her. Live and learn. If I was really evil I would tell you her Twitter name. ;-)

Glad to see that you didn't practice #4 today, otherwise, I may not have met you! Thanks for subscribing...looking forward to sharing more with each other.

Yeah I am not a snob. I recently started thinking that automatic "Thank you for RT" message with lists of usernames might be a sign of snob, although personally I still am happy receiving it (even if it is 1000% automatic). Maybe it is because I am still a newbie in Twitter.
  • Depending on how someone Retweets will determine how I respond to thank them. Well, I take that back. Actually it depends on that AND how many retweets there are.

If a post has started to get a lot of recognition, like the Forbes article did, and I know there is no way I can keep up, then I will list a few people at once to thank together. It's definitely not automated though.

This way I'm also not clogging up the Twitter stream with a lot of thank you's that no one else really wants to read. I want to make sure I provide value to my entire community.

However, if someone retweets a post and includes a comment with the retweet, then I like to respond with a specific @reply or DM to thank them. This way it gives me a chance to continue the conversation and build the relationship.

Stick around...We were all newbies not to long ago! I try to provide tips to help everyone no matter what level you're at. All my great commentators provide lots of value, too!

Isn't it funny how Twitter - for as great as it is to connect/converse in - can be cliquey? Sometimes I get ridiculously self-conscious when people don't respond, or when I notice a follower has dropped off. You bring up good lessons in social media to keep in mind, no matter how 'popular' you may be!
  • You know, it is funny, because I still get that feeling when someone drops off too. It's like, what the heck did I do (or not do) to lose them.

There are a few people or brands that I will always follow just because I find a ton of value in their tweets, like Mashable or NYTimes.

All we can do is provide the value we have. People delete their accounts, they purge or they may unfollow because I hit a nerve. That's okay. Actually, that's good...because it refines our communities and leaves those that we really communicate with.
  • Ava Diamond (@feistywoman)
Okay, Coree, I'm grinning real big. Because you're so right. And so real.

Sending you a big hug from Colorado, girl!
  • Thanks, Ava! I may step on the boundary line sometimes, but you'll always know I'm telling it like it is! :)

Stay warm up there in Colorado!
  • Thanks for your post... it helps be having another window into the way Twitter is perceived and works in human community.

I would guess "snob" is a matter of opinion... I've met twitter snobs who don't use it as twitter-marketing that think twitter-marketing is more snobbish than using twitter as a supplement to real life relationships.... They wonder why social media has to automatically entail economics....

Why interpret a "private" group as "elitism"?

I find twitter in my world better as a news and idea announcement than a way to have a conversation... too noisy, too short, too self-conscious, to difficult to manage unless you want to be glued to it. Is that snobbish? From a certain point of view. But treating the disposable as disposable may also be "wise." :)

I say each to his own. Who exactly is inventing these etiquette rules to a noisy medium anyway?

    Thanks for letting me rant!
  • Amen to that! I know I'm a bit bored by those SM gurus who write books about how important it is to not develop and ego and be helpful to everyone...then you answer a request of theirs for info and they don't even acknowledge your help. Trust my ass!
  • Now that's funny! There are very few "gurus" that I would really consider a guru of social media. How can you be a guru of something that has only be widely active for less than 5 years? Pa-leeze.

Here's a guru in my books. They practice what they preach. There's an old saying, "Those who can, do. And those who can't, coach." Watch out for those that only want to charge you a fee for their social media products, webinars, etc, but you seldom see them interacting with their followers.

A few peeps I admire are Jason Falls, Chris Brogan and Olivier Blanchard. They all have massive followings, but they actually TALK and joke with people. They all hold professional presentations, but they don't stop helping when they step off the stage. While they probably don't like being labeled a guru, I can definitely say they are the extreme opposite of a Twitter snob.
  • Amen Coree. I'd like to point out that Coree, despite having over 22k followers on Twitter, always finds time to reply to mentions or thank me for RTs, which I know is no small feat. Not only does she walk the walk, she has a larger TRUE audience by connecting with each and every one of them.
  • That's cuz you are the bomb, Eric! You have done an awesome job carving your niche out and getting relevant and useful information out to people...and that is exactly why people follow and engage with you.

I love picking up on your Tweets because I know you've taken the time to read the posts and include a little dialogue that shows what you found interesting. That really helps followers identify with the article.

Thanks for the kind words. It's guys like you that make social media so rewarding.
  • gloriarand
Whew! I'm so relieved to know I'm not a Twitter snob. But I have seen evidence of it in others. Good post - although I'm not sure you'll get those snobs to change their ways. One can only hope!
  • We can hope, but I doubt if it shames them into changing their evil ways. It is good to draw attention to their follies, though. Maybe others will learn what's going on and stop following them. Thanks for stopping by and for being a true Twitter friend!
